An MSW is a two-year advanced degree program that allows individuals to work in clinical settings. An MSW is the minimum degree requirement to become a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).

What is an LCSW?

 

LCSW: This stands for Licensed Clinical Social Worker. It is a master's level license that is recognized throughout the United States to provide therapy and counseling services to patients in various settings: community agencies, schools, health settings and private practice.

 

LCSW's are clinicians who are trained to look at psychological issues and interpersonal problems, training focuses on psychosocial diagnosis, assessment and treatment, client advocacy, consultation, evaluation and research. LCSW also do community work, policy work, child welfare and other therapeutic interventions. LCSW can diagnose mental health disorders and provide psychotherapy services to help decrease symptoms associated with these.

 

An LCSW has completed a master's degree in social work (MSW) and completed clinical internships hours in two different settings and/or populations during their master program. After graduation as an MSW, they must complete at least 3,000 hours of supervised work experience in order to be eligible to apply, take and pass two separate state exams to become licensed with the state of California.
